Portrait of an English Lady
Portrait of an English Lady
A fine, oil on canvas portrait of an English lady.
This superb portrait portrays the sitter wearing a gold, low-cut robe à la française ("sack-back gown") with puff sleeves with pearl detail. Her long grey hair is styled in the traditional high roll hairstyle - considered a status symbol as it required the wearer to sit for a great length of time while the "roll" was set - of the late 1700s.
The canvas has been professionally restored and cleaned by our specialist fine art restorer and is set within an impressive, carved gilt frame befitting the piece's period and subject.
Overall, the portrait is in very good condition with various craquelure commensurate with its age and history, adding character and charm.
