A delicately crafted marble statuette of Europa & Bull, after Jean-Baptiste Jules Klagmann (1810-1867).

Klagmann was a sculptor and decorative designer, who was born and died in Paris. In 1828, he entered Paris' École des Beaux-Arts, the most important centre of architectural education in the Western world, training many of the great artists in Europe.

It is only fitting, then, that this stunning piece, after Klagmann's original, depicts Europa, the daughter the Phoenician King of Tyre, seated on the back of a bull.

Capturing the Myth of Europa, it is said that the beauty of Europa inspired the love of Zeus, who approached her in the form of a white bull and abducted her. Carrying her away from her Phoenician home, across the ocean to the distant continent that would come to bear her name.
