Derived from the Greek god Dionysus, Bacchus was the Roman god of fertility, merrymaking and wine.
As a symbol of the transformative power of wine - a staple beverage of the ancient Mediterranean world - Bacchus attracted a passionate following of devotees. His celebratory festivals, known as the Bacchanalia, were met with great enthusiasm and often involved excessive drinking, dancing and wild, ecstatic revelry.
After evolving into public, city-wide festivities, the Bacchanalia became notorious for its debauchery and was eventually suppressed by the Roman Senate in 186 BCE due to concerns of moral corruption and political rebellion.
